To Bead or Not To Bead?
Sometimes people ask me how I got started in beading. I guess the idea first came to me after attending one of those home jewelry parties. Normally I am not a fan of those type of parties because the merchandise is pretty pricey. But this party was hosted by my daughter-in-law and I wanted to support her --- plus I did love the look of the jewelry in the catalogs and on display. I purchased my very first wrap bracelet at that party. By the time tax and shipping was added, the bracelet tallied $50+. I remember thinking to myself, "I could make that and for less!" Up until that point I had never considered making jewelry. But the seed was planted that day.
Jump AHEAD- A few months down the road (April 2015), I found myself drooling over strings of beads and gemstones in a local hobby store. There I was- at the crossroads. To bead or not to bead!? I had tried my hand at a few pieces for myself. It was satisfying and relaxing work. It was fun! I loved it! I entertained a question in my head, "Could I get paid to do this?"
I wonder how long I stood in front of those beads that day before making "THE IMPULSIVE DECISION"?
Jump IN! I did it! I threw caution to the wind and went for it that very day! I loaded up my shopping cart with beads and supplies and came home determined to give it a try.
My husband, (the corn and soybean farmer) was so supportive of me getting started in making jewelry. He thought the name (The Bead Farm) was fun and had potential since we love living on the farm. It would be fun to market my creations using the farm theme. One day we went "pickin" in the sheds on our acreage and found an old barn door and other oldies but goodies. These old barnwood vintage pieces gave us just the look we needed for our Bead Farm theme. We turned one unused bedroom in our house into a combination workshop/ display room for my jewelry.
